Since 1957, the firm of G. Tackaberry & Sons Construction Company Limited has been serving Eastern Ontario, and the area of the United Counties of Leeds and Grenville. Started by George Tackaberry (still the head of daily operations), the company has expanded services and equipment to meet customer demand. George's wife of 40 years, Joan Tackaberry, was an active partner in the company until her death in 1999. The family tradition continues with the Tackaberry children working in the business.


Company Head Offices and Asphalt Plant are near Athens, other main locations include--Tackaberry Sand & Stone Ltd. in Perth and Sweet's Sand & Gravel in Seeley's Bay. With an experienced and stable work force of approximately 60 full-time and 120 seasonal employees, company personnel are able to make cost effective decisions for the customer in a timely manner. With a commitment to job safety and aggregate resources management, the company has a full-time Safety /Property Manager and Certified Quality Control Technician on staff.


The company has aggregate material for a variety of customers from commercial builders to the home gardener. Products include crushed stone and gravel, asphalt, sandfill, topsoil, washed sand and ornamental stone.


Community Involvement


The company is pleased to say "Serving Beautiful Eastern Ontario Since 1957" and gives back to the area it serves.


Through the years G. Tackaberry & Sons Construction has been a contributor to many community groups; both financially and in-kind with equipment, material and personnel. Area youth sports and community events are the main recipients of donations; but numerous local health organizations and civic groups are also assisted. A precedent started by the late Joan Tackaberry is continued today in giving special consideration to groups that are low-profile, but provide valuable services to the community. On average over 250 groups per year are assisted in some manner, some with multiple requests.


Examples of community involvement include extensive assistance to the Athens Lions Club for the presentation of the annual Steam Exhibition, which is the local Lions main fundraiser. Company equipment and personnel are actively involved in preparing the grounds and presenting displays. The company frequently supplies floats and trucks for local parades and events with the assistance of employees donating their time. The Tackaberry antique truck collection is often seen at events throughout the area. Local schools and parks have received sand and pea stone for playground use, either free or at a discount. Community and school gardens have also received material free of charge for initial setup.


The company was pleased to assist the Township of Athens, Athens Lions Club and Athens Soccer Club volunteers build two new soccer fields in 2002 with company equipment and enthusiastic volunteer employee labour.
