FAQ

What is the difference between Sand, Gravel and Limestone?

Crushed stone is produced from natural deposits of limestone or other bedrock found in certain areas in Ontario. Through the process of drilling, blasting, crushing and screening, the various sizes of crushed stone are produced. We have crushed stone aggregates located throughout Lanark and Leeds & Grenville Counties.

Sand and gravel is extracted from naturally occurring deposits consisting of rounded rocks and boulders mixed with sand. Like crushed stone; sand and gravel also goes through the process of crushing and screening. We have sand & gravel located throughout Lanark and Leeds & Grenville Counties.

Do you have white stone?

We do not sell white stone.

What is 50/50 and 90/10?

50/50 is a 50% mixture of crushed asphalt and 50% of 5/8’s limestone. 90/10 is 90% crushed asphalt with 10% of 5/8’s limestone. These are great products for driveways and parking lots. However, this product works best when applied in hot weather and is graded and compacted heavily.

How do you change yards to tonnes?

A cubic yard is a measurement by volume, or most simply put, a measurement by size. A tonne is a measurement by weight. A cubic yard of material has a conversion factor (unit weight) so a cubic yard can be converted to a tonne or vice versa. The following is a rough conversion by product.

1 Cubic Yard of Sand weighs approximately 1.3 tonnes

1 Cubic Yard of Gravel weighs approximately 1.4 tonnes depending on moisture content

1 Cubic Yard of Limestone weighs approximately 1.5 tonnes

1 Cubic Yard of Top Soil weighs approximately 1.30 tonnes depending on moisture content.

What are the differences between Washed Filter Media Sand, Greater Than >5% Septic Sand and Less Than <5% Septic Sand ?

Washed Filter Media Sand is a gap graded sand (predominately only 3 to 4 grain sizes) which is made up predominately of mid-range grain sizes and having a very minimal amount of smaller to larger grain particle size. This sand has little to no silts or fine sand particles. This sand provides a very fast path for liquid to flow through due to its open structure and lack of silt content.

Greater Than >5% Septic Sand is a dense graded sand (many different grain sizes) with multiple grain sizes throughout and a larger number of fines (commonly referred to as silts and fine grain sand). This sand provides a slower delayed path for liquid to flow through due to its dense structure and higher silt content.

Less Than <5% Septic Sand is an open graded sand (uniform range of particle grain sizes) with a consistent blend of particle sizes from large to small and very minimal amount of silt. This sand provides a medium range path for liquid to flow through due to its uniform structure and minimal amount of silt content.

The Difference ultimately is how each sand performs when introduced to liquid and the speed of flow (commonly referred to as percolation rate) when liquid passes through it. Filter Media Sand allows for faster transfer of liquid throughout which allows for dispersal within a smaller footprint. Greater Than >5% Sand allows for a much slower transfer therefore requiring a much larger footprint and Less Than <5% Sand is a medium between fast and slow allowing for a modified footprint to disperse the same amounts of liquid.

The Ontario Building Code Section 8 provides further information in helping to establish the correct sand type for the intended purpose.
